Greenpeace opens SA office

SAinfo reporter Illegal logging, trawling Meanwhile, off the coast of West Africa, Greenpeace says marine life is being carried away by foreign trawlers, devastating local communities and depriving them of critical nutrition, causing poverty and food insecurity to increase. “While the environmental threats facing Africans are urgent and critical, Africa is in a position to leapfrog dirty development and become a leader in helping to avert catastrophic climate change and protect the natural environment,” said Kanoute. “We are here to help make that happen.” Unpredictable rainfall, lower crop yields and dwindling resources are causing mass migration, increased tension and conflict, Greenpeace says. Greenpeace International executive director Gerd Leipold said that tackling environmental problems in Africa was vital for ensuring a future for both its children and the world as a whole. South Africa: carbon emitter It plays a vital role in regulating the global climate and is the fourth largest forest carbon reservoir in the world. Yet if logging is allowed to continue at the projected rate, the DRC risks losing 40% of its forest within 40 years. The country, as with Africa as a whole, is in a position to harness abundant renewable energy sources – solar, wind and biomass – and take a lead in an African energy revolution. Africa ‘hardest hit’ 14 November 2008 While Africa contributes very little to global warming, the region will be one of the hardest hit by its effects. Over 180-million people in sub-Saharan Africa could die as a result of climate change by the end of the century. According to Greenpeace, South Africa is the 14th highest carbon emitter in the world, and must commit to measurable actions to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, including ending its dependence on coal, without resorting to expansions in nuclear power. The DRC office will focus on industrial logging, which threatens the Congo Basin rainforest and some 40-million people who are depend on it for their livelihoods. An energy revolution would not only help reduce climate change, says Greenpeace, but would bring electricity to rural areas, which is crucial for rural development, providing jobs and economic growth. “South Africa needs to take a strong stand at the UN climate talks for a deal that includes substantial funding from the industrialised world for developing countries to adapt to and mitigate the devastating effects of climate change,” said Greenpeace Africa executive director Amadou Kanoute. International environmental conservation organisation Greenpeace has opened its first South African office in Johannesburg, announcing a long-term commitment to building a strong presence in Africa, dedicated to tackling urgent environmental problems facing the continent including climate change, deforestation and overfishing. “While it is most likely to be one of the hardest and quickest hit by the effects of climate change, some of which can already be seen, Africa is also a major part of the solution,” he said. “Through harnessing its renewable energy potential and protecing its tropical forests Africa can lead the way in environmental development.” Tropical forest destruction accounts for about 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions. “The South African government should also support central African countries by backing moves to create a funding mechanism that makes protecting tropical forests and the climate more economical than logging.”last_img read more

Microsoft Investors Want To Ctrl+Alt+Del Bill Gates

first_imgTags:#bill gates#Microsoft 3 Areas of Your Business that Need Tech Now brian proffitt Three major investors in Microsoft have made it clear that they are not happy with how the company is doing, and what needs to be done to set things right: get Bill Gates off the board of directors.Reuters is reporting today that three of Microsoft’s top 20 investors are privately calling for Gates’ resignation, which would be the first time the Microsoft founder has been implicated in the company’s perceived lackluster performance. Outgoing CEO Steve Ballmer has already been viewed as part of the problem at the software company, but this appears to be the first time major investors have called on Gates himself to vacate the premises. The three investors, which the Reuters story did not name, hold more than 5% of Microsoft’s stock. It is not clear yet if the board will be sympathetic to their call. The Argument For Gates To Let GoTechnology analyst Jack Gold thinks that a dramatic change—and ousting the company’s founder after 38 years certainly qualifies as dramatic—may be just the thing Microsoft needs. “They certainly have a point in that view, given MSFT’s performance. And since Gates is chairman of the board, and the board has oversight, they blame the board as much as management (Ballmer),” Gold wrote in a message to ReadWrite.“But I think the bigger issue is, now that Ballmer is being replaced, who will lead? My opinion (and perhaps those that want Gates out) is that as long as Gates and Ballmer have essentially veto power over the [new CEO] selection process (since between them they control a large portion of the shares and have control over the board), that not much will change and the replacement will be cut from the same cloth, so to speak,” Gold added. “If you eliminate the existing chair and limit the influence of Ballmer on the selection process, you’re more likely to get someone that can take MSFT in a needed new direction. And that would be the best outcome, in my opinion.”Image courtesy of Reuters/Brendan McDermid Related Posts center_img Cognitive Automation is the Immediate Future of… IT + Project Management: A Love Affair Massive Non-Desk Workforce is an Opportunity fo…last_img read more

Among those arraigned were about two dozen officials and personnel, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police and two Sub-Inspectors.The Supreme Court was to take up further hearing on the issue on September 4. Teslas Chinesebuilt Model 3 could cost almost 10000 less than imported versions

first_img Tesla,Enlarge ImageIt’s all in a day’s work for the Jeep Cherokee, the most American-made car in 2019. Jeep With high trade tensions looming and increasing talk of tariffs, more and more consumers are looking to buy American. has released its annual American Made Index, showcasing companies that use the most American-sourced parts and labor in their vehicles. The results may surprise analyzed more than 100 US-built vehicles for five key data points: manufacturing location, parts sourcing, US employment, engine sourcing and transmission sourcing. You might think something like the Ford F-150 would top the list, but it drops from its No. 5 spot for 2018 and out of the top 10 completely. Even the first-place holder, the Jeep Cherokee, is a pretty global product. It’s a Jeep, sure, but that brand is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, an Italian-owned surveyed 1,000 people and found that half are concerned about automotive import tariffs, with 41% saying they are unsure if tariffs would make them more likely to buy American. Either way, we’re big fans of all the vehicles on this list. These days, buying American doesn’t necessarily mean sticking with a US-based automaker. Car Industry 50 Photos Now playing: Watch this: Acura RDXThe third-generation Acura RDX squeaks into the top ten list with larger proportions, plenty of interior space and better handling than its predecessor. Forward collision warning with collision mitigation braking, adaptive cruise control that works even in low-speed traffic, lane-keeping steering assist and road departure mitigation are all standard across the board. Like its MDX counterpart, the RDX is available with the A-Spec styling package. The RDX sports a 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine. Output is stated at 273 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, and it’s mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The new RDX is built in East Liberty, Ohio. While we’ve all been ogling the new mid-engine Corvette, it’s easy to forget what a performance bargain the current-generation ‘Vette is. From the base trim to the Grand Sport to the bonkers ZR1, the Corvette is an American icon.My preference is for the Grand Sport, which strikes a perfect balance between everyday drivability and canyon-carving performance. The 6.2-liter V8 puts out 460 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. You can get it with a seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, but the kicker is the borrowed chassis and aero parts from the beefier Z06. Like I said, perfect balance. Heck, you can even get a snorkel.Base models get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission, but a more popular choice is the 3.6-liter V6 gas engine with 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Elon Musk via Twitter In the past, Teslas that have been imported into China for sale there have been expensive. Like, shockingly expensive — pardon the terrible pun — relative to their prices in the US, thanks to various import tariffs and taxes. That has affected sales for the brand in the world’s largest car market. Now though, Tesla is getting closer than ever to having its Chinese Gigafactory up and running, and once Model 3s start rolling off the line there, the pricing game could change dramatically, as could the brand’s sales. But how much will a Chinese-built Model 3 cost if you live in the Middle Kingdom?According to a report published on Monday by Bloomberg, we might be close to having a definitive answer to that question. Estimates currently put the base price for a Chinese-built Tesla at 300,000 Yuan, or around $43,400 before EV subsidies, and that’s pretty damned reasonable, considering that the current cheapest imported Model 3 is listed at 377,000 Yuan (or $54,555).Tesla is planning on making an announcement about its future Chinese-produced cars on May 31, though it’s unclear if the pricing of those cars will be among the items discussed.Tesla didn’t immediately respond to Roadshow’s request for comment. Transport dept comes up with autorickshaw policy draft

first_imgKolkata: In a bid to regularise plying of auto-rickshaws, the state Transport department has come up with the draft notification of the auto-rickshaw policy. It may be recalled that the state Transport department had decided to frame a policy of which a major part is route rationalisation, a mechanism to fix fares of a particular route and initiatives to solve the existing problem related to plying of unregistered auto-rickshaws.A high-power committee was also formed to frame the policy and a draft of the auto-rickshaw policy has been framed. In a meeting held on Wednesday at Nazrul Manch, the draft of the policy has been distributed among representatives of auto-rickshaw unions. Transport and Environment minister Suvendu Adhikari and Additional Chief Secretary of transport department Alapan Bandyopadhyay along with other concerned officials were present in the meeting. The unions and the concerned authorities have been directed to submit their feedback after going through the draft policy by mid July. They have to submit their feedback in a written format at the office of the state Transport department. After bringing in necessary changes, if required, following the feedback of the stakeholders, the final notification declaring the auto-rickshaw policy will be issued. Also Read – Heavy rain hits traffic, flightsAs per the draft policy, no auto-rickshaws will be allowed to operate on any unauthorised route. Ferrying of excess passengers than permitted level will not be allowed. Driver cannot use mobile phones while driving and loud sound systems will not be allowed to be installed. No high power LED lights will be allowed in front of the auto-rickshaws. The most important one is that auto-rickshaw drivers cannot charge exorbitantly. Moreover, without offer letters, auto-rickshaw cannot be sold out. It may be mentioned that officials of the department had received reports regarding operations of unauthorised auto-rickshaws without registrations or permit, which is required under the provisions of Motor Vehicles Act 1988.last_img read more

Canada has a lot to offer travellers during sesquicentennial year

first_img FREDERICTON — Canada already has a lot to offer travellers, but as the country celebrates its 150th birthday in 2017 with a year full of sesquicentennial celebrations, there’s even more to see and do.“Because of the celebrations happening around the country, a normal festival event will be that more special because of the 150th anniversary. We see a lot of interest by Canadians to travel within Canada,” said Gary Howard of the Canadian Automobile Association.Howard said he’s hearing from people interested in exploring areas of the country they haven’t been to, or visiting favourite places again.“I think you will see a lot of movement with people from Eastern Canada going to the West, and vice versa,” he said.Howard said he expects most of the travel will be during the summer months, with the peak around Canada Day, July 1.He said there many great places to enjoy and take part in the birthday celebrations.“Charlottetown and Ottawa are the obvious ones, but I think that we will see each and every city and community is going to have its own celebration. You think about the Calgary Stampede _ it’s going to be much better in 2017 because they’ll use that event to get more excited about the 150th. There’s going to be lots of options right across the country.”More news:  Sunwing to further boost Mazatlán service with new flights from OttawaTravel media company Lonely Planet has named Canada as the No.1 country to visit in 2017.“Bolstered by the wave of positivity unleashed by its energenic new leader Justin Trudeau, and with dynamic cities that dominate global livability indices and a reputation for inclusiveness and impeccable politeness, the world’s second-largest country will usher in its sesquicentennial in 2017 in rollicking good health,” their “Best in Travel 2017” guide says.“You add that to the perennial favourites such as Vancouver’s great food scene, the great outdoors in the Canadian Rockies and beautiful fall colours in Nova Scotia. It’s a great destination whatever year it is, but 2017 has a lot to offer,” Lonely Planet spokesman Alex Howard said from his home in Nashville, Tenn. And he said with the weak Canadian dollar, Canada offers a great value.“International travellers, especially those from the United States, are going to have a lot to spend their money on,” he said.More news:  Sunwing to further boost Mazatlán service with new flights from OttawaGary Howard said train travel is an interesting way to get across the country and see cities, towns and everything in between.“What we see for Western Canada is rail companies that go from Vancouver to Banff, or Vancouver to Calgary. They do that whole tour through the valley and the Rockies. That’s five to seven days, so it’s a lot shorter, but you have dining onboard, and those companies stop at night so that you’re not missing any of the scenery. They’ll stop at the evening, you stay at a hotel, and get back on in the morning,” he said.He said the cruise ship companies are also adding more ships to routes that make stops on Canada’s east and west coasts. He said it’s a great way to tour Atlantic Canada or British Columbia without having to drive.
