first_imgArsenal legend Merson: Wenger prioritised himself over Ramsey & other free agentsby Freddie Taylor9 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveEx-Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger prioritised extending his own contract over his players, according to Paul Merson. The club legend was expressing his rage at Arsenal’s decision to allow Aaron Ramsey to become a free agent this summer. And Merson thinks some of the blame must go to Wenger. The former Gunners star told Sky Sports: “It’s stupidity from Arsenal to allow someone of Ramsey’s quality to let their contract run down.”It’s yet another player after Alexis Sanchez, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Theo Walcott. Players’ contracts come to an end then they all leave on frees.”In footballing terms, it’s criminal. It’s like buying an £80m house, waiting for the leasehold to run out and losing the house.”Arsene Wenger sorted out his contract every year but seemed to forget everyone else’s!”I wouldn’t mind if all these players were 35 years of age or older, but they are in the prime of their careers when they are playing their best football ever.” TagsTransfersAbout the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

Speaking to reporters before beginning her day, she said, “BJP has systematically attacked every institution in the country in the last five years. You all know it better than I do. So I think the Prime Minister should stop thinking that people are fools and understand that they see through all his antics.” According to party workers, Priyanka, who is also Congress in-charge of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, will interact with her party workers at a guest house in Chunar before leaving for Shastri Memorial by road in Ramnagar. She will then arrive at Ramnagar ghat to take the boat ride to Assi Ghat, where she will interact with the fishermen, the Jain community as well as women. Tagore & today’s nationalism

first_imgIn this age of forced nationalism when countries and political leaders across the globe are sedulously trying to cultivate moral blindness in regard to the cult of patriotism, Rabindranath Tagore, with his clarity of thought and prudent foresight, believed that a country could not be greater than the ideals of humanity. And with age, his ideas have gained greater relevance. “…the idea of the Nation is one of the most powerful anaesthetics that man has invented. Under the influence of its fumes, people can carry out its systematic programme of the most virulent self-seeking without being in the least aware of its moral perversion, in fact feeling dangerously resentful if it is pointed out,” says Tagore in one of his lectures that was later incorporated in a book titled Nationalism in 1917. In 2014, when Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister of India, he won the elections on the basis of his sweeping promises to modernise the economy, fight corruption, make India clean and green, provide jobs and aggressively assert India’s global presence. Five years later, the secular agenda has taken centre stage in a country already rived by dangerous religious divisions. Interestingly, the Hindu sectarianism has never been more profound and enfranchised at every level of the government. Modi’s efforts to make India a Hindu state have attained renewed vigour in the past few months which has left India completely fragmented and opinionated. There is widespread violence in the country that is “provoked by the championing of a singular identity of people as members of one religion or another… interested groups led by ambition and outside instigation are today using the communal motive for destructive political ends.” And as history has shown us, sane or rational public discourse is not possible in an atmosphere surcharged with religion and nationalism and when millions believe that a man can do no wrong! Today, the man who was hailed as a hero in 2014 is now seen inculcating fear. All of India is a stage for him and he is the only one who plays many parts — from chaiwalla to chowkidar! Tagore wrote about the dark side of nationalism but Modi saw its brighter side and created a potent mixture of nationalism and religion. Here, the relevance of Tagore gains momentum as an entire nation fights to protect its secular identity. Gurudev, post-1917, emerged as the critic of the modern idea of nation or the nation-state. His three novels — Gora, Char Adhyay and Ghare Baire — where he unravels the dangers of hyper-masculine aggressiveness, reflect his ‘dis-ease’ with nationalism. He asserts that “this nationalism is a cruel epidemic of evil that is sweeping over human world of the present age, eating into its moral vitality”. This expression itself depicts the need for a deeper understanding of today’s nationalism that Tagore spoke of more than 100 years ago. It’s time we become cautious and rise to the occasion before this savage “nationalism” “tramples under its tread all the sweet flowers of simple faith and the living ideals of man.”last_img read more

Wrestling No 2 Ohio State defeats No 4 Michigan 1815 but Kyle

Ohio State’s Kyle Snyder stands during the national anthem prior to the the dual-meet against Iowa on Jan. 21 in the Schottenstein Center. Credit: Jack Westerheide | Photo EditorThe No. 2 Ohio State wrestling team (13-1, 8-1 Big Ten) beat No. 4 Michigan (9-3, 6-2 Big Ten) 18-15 Sunday evening in a closely contested dual meet, despite senior heavyweight Kyle Snyder losing his first collegiate match since 2015. Snyder dropped his first match of the season 3-1 against No. 2 Adam Coon, who is listed at 6-foot-6 and 285 pounds, 7 inches and 60 pounds larger than Snyder. The physical mismatch made this match interesting leading into tonight, but Coon stunned many by beating the Olympic gold medalist. Snyder had not lost in college since Iowa State’s Kyven Gadson beat him in the 2015 NCAA final at 197 pounds. In the third period of No. 3 Bo Jordan’s match against No. 6 Myles Amine at 174 pounds, he took the lead with a takedown, and gained the riding time advantage point after preventing Amine from escaping. Eventually, a stalemate was called before Amine got the escape. Jordan led 5-4, essentially because of riding time.As the clock wound down, Amine needed a two-point takedown to win, and he got it in the final seconds. Initially, the referee did not award any points, but Amine found the correct positioning for the takedown before the clock hit zero. This moment gave Michigan their first lead of the meet, 12-11, with three bouts remaining.Michigan remained close with the Buckeyes, but Ohio State received solid performances from two of its highly ranked heavyweights. Ohio State’s No. 2 Myles Martin won 5-3 against No. 5 Domemic Abounader. The Buckeyes’ No. 1 Kollin Moore bounced back after his first loss of the season against Penn State with a major decision win against No. 12 Kevin Beazley 17-6 at 197 pounds. Moore registered two takedowns late in the first period to take control, and dominated in the second and third with Beazley losing energy. Another undefeated Buckeye went down when No. 5 Stevan Micic upset No. 2 Luke Pletcher 11-4 at 133 pounds. Pletcher is now 22-1.Michigan’s No. 9 Logan Massa beat No. 14 Te’Shan Campbell 6-2 at 165 pounds to hand Campbell his sixth-straight loss. Microsoft Azure reportedly chooses Xilinx chips over Intel Altera for AI coprocessors

first_imgXilinx Inc., has reportedly won orders from Microsoft Corp.’s Azure cloud unit to account for half of the co-processors currently used on Azure servers to handle machine-learning workloads. This will replace the chips made by Intel Corp, according to people familiar with Microsoft’s’ plans as reported by Bloomberg Microsoft’s decision comes with effect to add another chip supplier in order to serve more customers interested in machine learning. To date, this domain was run by Intel’s Altera division. Now that Xilinx has bagged the deal, does this mean Intel will no longer serve Microsoft? Bloomberg reported Microsoft’s confirmation that it will continue its relationship with Intel in its current offerings. A Microsoft spokesperson added that “There has been no change of sourcing for existing infrastructure and offerings”. Sources familiar with the arrangement also commented on how Xilinx chips will have to achieve performance goals to determine the scope of their deployment. Cloud vendors these days are investing heavily in research and development centering around the machine learning field. The past few years has seen an increase in need of flexible chips that can be configured to run machine-learning services. Companies like Microsoft, Google and Amazon are massive buyers of server chips and are always looking for alternatives to standard processors to increase the efficiency of their data centres. Holger Mueller, an analyst with Constellation Research Inc., told SiliconANGLE that “Programmable chips are key to the success of infrastructure-as-a-service providers as they allow them to utilize existing CPU capacity better, They’re also key enablers for next-generation application technologies like machine learning and artificial intelligence.” Earlier this year, Xilinx CEO Victor Peng made clear his plans to focus on data center customers, saying “data center is an area of rapid technology adoption where customers can quickly take advantage of the orders of magnitude performance and performance per-watt improvement that Xilinx technology enables in applications like artificial intelligence ( AI) inference, video and image processing, and genomics” Last month, Xilinx made headlines with the announcement of a new breed of computer chips designed specifically for AI inference. These chips combine FPGAs with two higher-performance Arm processors, plus a dedicated AI compute engine and relates to the application of deep learning models in consumer and cloud environments. The chips promise higher throughput, lower latency and greater power efficiency than existing hardware. Looks like Xilinx is taking noticeable steps to make itself seen in the AI market. Royal Lahaina Resort will fill your clients with that Maui love

first_imgRoyal Lahaina Resort will fill your clients with that Maui love << Previous PostNext Post >> Tags: Hawaii Candice Abraham There is so much right with Kaanapali Beach on Maui that once your clients visit it may be hard for them to imagine vacationing anywhere else. There are a fair number of Canadian travellers who know this already, as they make the trip to Kaanapali’s shores year after year. One of the oldest known hotels on Kaanapali Beach is the Royal Lahaina Resort. Its location is so ideal, it’s reason enough to suggest the property to first-time Kaanapali travellers or repeat visitors. But it’s Royal Lahaina Resort’s warm, Hawaiian ambience that will fill their hearts with Maui love. The Royal Lahaina Resort offers a variety of room categories to fit a plethora of budgets, from standard hotel rooms in their Lahaina Kai Tower, to Cottage rooms and suites. Earlier this year my family took time at the Royal Lahaina resort. We arrived to walk into our Oceanfront Lanai Suite (located in the Lahaina Kai Tower) to panoramic views of the Pacific wrapping around our living area and bedroom. This combined with the Hawaiian style décor got my family and I in the Maui vibe in an instant. We visited the resort during whale watching season, so of course, to top off the stellar views from our double lanai were mother and calf humpback whales breeching and playing together in the ocean (no joke). It was one of those vacation moments when you ask yourself if this is actually for real — a Maui experience that money can’t buy. This wasn’t the only memorable experience we had at Royal Lahaina Resort. We spent a lazy afternoon going from beach to Royal Lahaina’s main pool and back again. The sun was beginning to set and the resort’s musician sang acoustic slow jams while we enjoyed a snack and a few beverages by the pool, the ocean waves crashing in the background. There were many families soaking this experience up just as much as we were, happy guests all around, including a large extended family sitting together at a table outside their oceanfront cottage, laughing over a game of cards as the music played on.It was around that time I heard another group of guests talking about how they could hear humpbacks singing just by putting their ears in the ocean along Royal Lahaina’s stretch of beach. My husband and I had to see (or hear) this for ourselves, so we took turns getting into the water, lying our heads back so just our ears dipped under the sea and sure enough, a chorus of humpbacks on an afternoon serenade. It was another vacation moment that won’t be forgotten, but even if it wasn’t the height of whale watching season on Maui, the laid-back atmosphere at Royal Lahaina Resort had already filled us up with memories. It’s no surprise that Royal Lahaina Resort is the kind of property that doesn’t charge its guests a resort fee. It adds that home-away-from-home comfort to a resort that already feels like one. Royal Lahaina Resort also offers free in-room WiFi and promos that include 30% off Special Partial Ocean View rooms with six night minimum stays (rates from $185/night).Agents interested in visiting the Royal Lahaina Resort can also take advantage of a 30% discount on available retail rates at the property, a good idea if you’d like to sell more of it.And for agents selling the Royal Lahaina Resort, for every two bookings of three nights or more, they will receive a free night (no maximum). With a minimum of four bookings of three nights or more, agents can also earn daily buffet for two on top of free room nights. And with a minimum of six bookings of three nights or more agents will also earn two tickets to the Royal Lahaina Resort’s famous luau – The Myths of Maui Luau –which is a must-see experience in and of itself.
