A computer robot model of the gait of Australopithecus afarensis (aka, Lucy), reported in the BBC News, suggests that she walked upright. This is partly on the skeletal structure of the foot and the distance between the Laetoli footprints preserved in fossil ash, where are claimed to date from the same time period Lucy lived. The article ends with some doubt: “There are still some people who argue that, looking at the anatomy of the foot bones of afarensis, that they were unlikely to have made the Laetoli footprints,” [Chris Stringer] told the BBC News website. “So it doesn’t end the argument because there is still the possibility that there were different creatures around at the time.”The Laetoli prints are identical to modern human footprints. The only reason paleoanthropologists claim they were made by A. afarensis is the dating: they are too “old” to have been made by modern man. That’s why the artist’s rendition shows the tracks being made by a family of evolving creatures with an upright gait, human feet and ape-like faces. Our home construction project is over the hump: drywall and flooring have been installed, exterior trim is wrapping up, and interior trim, cabinets, and tile will be starting soon.Although things are generally going quite well, and while I am happy with the house, I am not enjoying the process very much. Even after 25 years as a contractor, I don’t deal well with the stress of coordinating dozens of subcontractors and suppliers. Materials don’t arrive when promised, workers don’t finish on schedule, and managing different trades in the house at the same time creates tensions. All this adds up to a lot of lost sleep at night and waiting around for people to show up and answer calls and emails during the day. I know I will end up with a superior product in the end, but the path there is taking its toll on my sanity. Moving out(side)As exterior trim is wrapping up, we will finally have enough space on the site to start masonry and driveways. Thin veneer brick will be installed on the concrete foundation in order to avoid having a ledge extending out past the siding; a brick stoop will go in at the front door; a walkway will extend to the sidewalk; and short planter walls will be installed at the rear of the house. The main driveway will be pervious concrete — necessary to comply with local impervious surface requirements — and pervious brick pavers will create a patio area that will double as a driveway to the carport. If the weather and trade contractors cooperate, we’re hoping to wrap up construction and move in by early April. Since Decatur requires a green certification certificate to issue a Certificate of Occupancy, we will likely wrap up EarthCraft and NGBS certification quickly, and deal with the LEED certification later since that is a much slower process. One issue that I take full responsibility for was the drywall adhesive. I neglected to specify a low-VOC product, so when I first walked in the house when the hangers were working I was hit hard with the fumes from the glue they used.Fortunately, it will dissipate quickly and is unlikely to have any long-lasting effects, but it would have been nice to use a less toxic product. Not being a full-time builder, I don’t have standard specs nor ongoing relationships with trade contractors. Armed with either, this problem could have been easily avoided. Most green building programs provide points for low-VOC products. Some even require the use of all low-VOC sealants and adhesives in a project. This can be one of the most difficult tasks to accomplish considering how many different trades bring their own products on the jobsite.Without a guard at the door, inspecting everything that arrives on site, it is challenging to keep all high-VOC products off the job. I have specified no added urea formaldehyde material for cabinets and closet shelf systems, and low- or zero-VOC paints and floor finishes. I’m still waiting for the specifications on some of those products. I plan on not being shocked at odors when I walk in the house again. New and recurring problemsThe incompetent framing work continues to haunt us. The exterior trim crew is working diligently to correct out-of-level, out-of-plumb, and out-of-square construction, hiding a multitude of sins with skillful finish work. Few people will every notice the little details that will bother me, and luckily these are all cosmetic at this point and won’t affect the building performance.Interior trim work will start soon. I believe we have addressed most of the issues inside, but we will only know once installation starts. With a little luck we won’t uncover any major problems. Looking inwardOther than a small scheduling snafu with drywall finishers and floor installers on site at the same time, the interior work is moving along well. I installed Owens Corning blown-in fiberglass insulation in the walls behind netting and fiberglass batts in most of the rim joists. The installers did a good job over two long days, with my close supervision on the installation of the batts (after I caught them doing a typical Grade 3 cram-it-in-as-fast-as-they-can method). Luckily they were receptive to my instructions about cutting to fit around pipes and wires. We wrapped up in the dark with headlamps lighting the way. Attic insulation will go in later — R-50 loose fill over the Zip Sheathing we installed on top of the second-floor ceiling joists. One minor issue in the attic is the vent baffles: although they are installed and are high enough to go over the top of the insulation, as installed, they don’t block off the soffit, so additional work will need to be done before we can insulate.Luckily climate change is cooperating and giving us spring-like temperatures much of this winter. Except for a short cold snap that delayed the finishers before our current 70+ temperatures, drywall was installed and finished efficiently by a very professional crew. Two small electric space heaters kept the house from getting too cold for a few days, thanks to the tight and well-insulated envelope.Wood floors are installed. Since the entire house is on a slab and I wanted site-finished wood, we installed plywood on the slab, nailed through the Polyguard Term vapor and termite barrier, which was then treated with Boracare. We had some nail pops that took some work to correct, but the floor went in well, and so far there are no noticeable squeaks or soft spots.Interior doors and trim, ceramic tile, and cabinet installation all start soon, so I expect the activity and my stress level to rise along with the activity inside. 1. “Marquee” EffectThis effect, by far, was the effect that stood out to me the most. It’s one of the most interesting ways start off a music video. It’s not really an effect I have seen out there before, but the minute I saw it, I instantly wondered how the filmmakers created it. So, here’s what I think they did.It all starts with a series of adjustment layers. Import some footage into AE, and create about eight adjustment layers that are angled at the horizon, growing bigger the farther from the center they go. Once you have all of your masks in place, create your desired color effect in Lumetri Color on the middle adjustment layer. Create a keyframe sequence that makes it turn on and off for a few frames. From there, go down the row and paste the effects in sequential order, so it looks like the light is traveling down the path just like it would on a marquee sign. Now obviously mine is an incredibly basic version of the effect in “SICKO MODE,” but you get the idea. If you want a more detailed color change, or if you would like even more effects to travel down your train of adjustment layers, you can always keyframe those in as well if you have the time. The adjustment layers are just the foundation for creating more intricate versions of this effect.2. Datamosh EffectDatamoshing is a super-interesting way to blend footage together, or an attention-grabbing way to transition between shots. It manipulates pixels within a frame and corrupts them on purpose to create a trippy effect that blends two shots together through ghosted pixels. If that made absolutely no sense to you, here’s a video to help you out:In “SICKO MODE,” the filmmakers use the effect to transition between different sections of the song, using the power of the “melting” effect.3. Camera Shake EffectsWhen Drake introduces “Young La Flame” at the end of his first verse, there’s an effect where the camera is shaking while Drake’s head stays in the center of the frame. You may have also seen this effect when Pennywise runs towards the camera in It:Now this effect is actually pretty simple to do — literally one button-simple. Record some footage of someone moving around while you shake the camera back and forth, side to side. Import that footage into After Effects.Once your footage is loaded onto the timeline, all you have to do is press “Warp Stabilizer” in the Tracker tab. This will track the movement of your shot and center the head in the middle of the frame. If you don’t want the image to get cropped, you can also go into the Effect Controls tab for the Warp Stabilizer and change the Borders tab to “Stabilize Only,” then scale from there.4. Smoke EffectsIf you want to create a wild, colorful aesthetic, sometimes colored smoke is the perfect tool. In the music video above, Drake is surrounded in red smoke, and the cloud envelops a house. This smoke effect is not digital; it is a very simple analog effect that uses smoke canisters. This may seem pretty obvious, but if you want to recreate this effect, here’s a video that will help you use smoke safely and effectively. Travis Scott’s music video for “SICKO MODE” inspired us to recreate some of its truly awesome visual effects. Here are our four favorite.Over the weekend, Travis Scott dropped the highly anticipated music video for his hit single off of “ASTROWORLD,” his new album released earlier this year. After only being online for three days, the view count is currently at 12 million — and climbing. This video is full of incredible effects and visuals, putting the city of Houston front and center through a distorted lens of crazy colors. (Note: some of the content is explicit.)Now obviously, this video had a large budget and a huge team that worked on it, so you can’t really recreate all of these effects (unless you want to rent your own horse to ride through the streets). So, we’ve gathered four effects from “SICKO MODE” that you can recreate on your own without too much hassle. Images via “SICKO MODE” (Travis Scott).Looking for more video production tips? All-NBA center Rudy Gobert and guard Rodney Hood are commonly thought to be the future of the franchise, but Favors could be the key to the Jazz earning back-to-back playoff berths for the first time this decade.Favors spent the last season and a half dealing with knee and back injuries that didn’t require surgery, but sapped him of his athleticism. Being light-footed and nimble in a powerful 6-foot-10 is what made Favors unique. He could attack the rim, finish with touch and knock down jumpers past the elbow. On the defensive end, the former No. 3 overall pick out of Georgia Tech was agile enough to guard multiple positions, protect the rim and not be a liability in pick-and-roll. But the season before the injuries, Favors averaged 16.0 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and was considered a borderline All-Star. He and Hayward were thought of as the nucleolus of a young Jazz roster.Hayward, however, developed into a max-contract All-Star and Gobert evolved into one of the dominant centers in the league while Favors struggled to stay on the floor. The Jazz then brought in George Hill, who had a career year, and Joe Johnson, who started eating up major minutes at the four position, then advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2010.Favors was no longer one of Utah’s rising stars.“Anytime a player goes through this, there’s no question of a mental component,” Jazz general manager Dennis Lindsey said. “We do appreciate that Derrick persevered and didn’t complain when his role was adjusted. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will vehemently oppose the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) plan to change the method of choosing its boss.ICC chief Sharad Pawar with PCB chairman Ijaz Butt. The BCB was to nominate a person for the vice-president’s post while the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was to put forward a name for the president’s post (2014-16) at the ICC’s annual meetings in Hong Kong this month.Since 1997, ICC presidents are being chosen on rotation basis from among its 10 Test playing countries, though Zimbabwe was later excluded from the elite club. When contacted, BCB president Mustafa Kamal said he would oppose the ICC’s move. “We would definitely not accept the change in the method of selecting presidents and will oppose the move during the meeting,” Kamal told MAIL TODAY.Kamal disclosed that the BCB and the ICC have been discussing the issue for some time now. “If a law has to be made it should come one full rotation (of the Test playing nations) is complete.Only then we will accept it. We should also get an opportunity to head the ICC,” he emphasised. No Bangladeshi has ever headed the ICC. Interestingly, the only time a Pakistani headed the ICC, the London-based chartered accountant Ehsan Mani (2003- 06), he did not hold any official post in the PCB. PCB president Ijaz Butt didn’t respond to calls made on Monday. The ICC has barred teams from touring Pakistan for international matches following a series of violent incidents in the country.advertisementICC spokesman Colin Gibson confirmed that the issue would come up at the annual meeting.”The presidency is for discussion at annual conference. It is an agenda item,” he said.Sharad Pawar currently heads the ICC and New Zealander Alan Isaac has been chosen as vice-president to succeed the Indian agriculture minister next year when his two- year term ends. The ICC apparently took the decision to change the way of picking presidents at its governance committee meeting in Chennai last week.It is widely believed that the acrimonious behind-the-scenes battle for picking Pawar’s successor, or the vice- president, is the reason behind the proposed change.Australia and New Zealand had jointly nominated former Aussie Prime Minister John Howard’s name last year. But a majority of boards rejected his name, apparently because of his criticism of Robert Mugabe’s regime in Zimbabwe in 2007 when he asked the Australian team not to tour the African nation.Howard, who was Australian prime minister for 11 years, in 2004 called Muttiah Muralitharan a “chucker”, leading to a diplomatic row between his country and Sri Lanka. The Shashank Manohar-headed Board of Control for Cricket in India was among the boards that opposed Howard’s nomination. The ICC, in fact, never had a permanent and satisfactory method of choosing its head. Earlier, the head of the Marylebone Cricket Club also headed the ICC and later they used to be known as chairman. Jagmohan Dalmiya ( 1997- 2000) was the first elected president.Dalmiya said that the decision to choose presidents on rotation began in 1997. “The cycle of appointing presidents began with me,” Dalmiya told MAIL TODAY . He was also surprised on hearing that the ICC was going to change the rules and wanted to know the reasons for doing so.Mani too was surprised. “I don’t know why the ICC wants to change it,” he told Times Now. “You need vote by seven members to pass a resolution. So, if nine (ICC full) members have already agreed to the proposal then it will be difficult for Pakistan.”
