Greenspun Looking to Hire 30 to 50 New Online Staffers

first_imgIt’s true! Greenspun is planning to hire a veritable army of 30 to 50 new online staffers over the next six months for its “category crushing” Web site, the company’s president Michael Carr wrote in an e-mail FOLIO: today. The tip came from this comment, posted to our original story earlier this week: There is a rumor that seems pretty credible that they are hiring close to 50 new web people in 2008. I saw a couple of folks from the [Las Vegas] Sun speak in San Francisco this week, and it was definitely the most impressive local news site I’ve seen. If those are the folks who are building the sites that this guy is talking about, then I have got to believe that they are going to do something interesting. And this despite Greenspun’s decision this week to shutter its monthly Las Vegas Life and transition its content online, although that move may have had more to do with the fact that LVL was rubbing up against Greenspun’s other luxury glossy, Vegas.last_img read more

Roger Federer Rafael Nadal angry with Novak Djokovic Serb tries to calm

first_imgNovak Djokovic made light of a reported rift with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal on March 20 saying that he welcomes the decision taken by the two tennis legends regarding the ouster of ATP chairman Chris Kermode.Djokovic is the current president of the ATP player’s council and he was elected to the position ahead of the 2018 edition of the US Open. The Serb was one of those vociferously pushing for the ouster of Kermode who has been voted out of his role as chairman of the ATP and will leave chair at the end of this year. This move was supposedly made without consulting either Federer or Nadal and the Swiss was not too pleased about the situation.Federer had said that he was not “chasing” Djokovic for an explanation but at Indian Wells made no bones about how it was “hard to understand” why Djokovic turned down a request to discuss the situation. The world number 1, on his part, says that he welcomes the input of the Spaniard and Swiss legends. Nadal and Federer during Laver Cup Day 1 actionMICHAL CIZEK/AFP/Getty Images”We welcome them as well as anyone else who wants to join the political discussions,” Djokovic said ahead of the ATP Miami Open. “The player council is only part of the structure. We are not part of the board or deciding anything. We are in consultation and collaboration with player board representatives.”The Serb said that Nadal and Federer have long been icons of their sport and their opinions are of utmost importance to anyone related to tennis. “Federer and Nadal have been icons of our sport for so many years and their opinions are extremely important to everyone. If they want to be active and part of it, either officially or unofficially, I think it’s only positive for us.””I saw Roger today. We were cutting the ribbon at the opening of the center court. We had a small chat but there was no time to talk about the political stuff. Hopefully we will have time in the next few days to go through some things.”Nadal had earlier stated that a decision as big as the removal of the chairman should have been taken after consulting everyone. The Spaniard was obviously displeased that he was not contacted and could not voice his opinion on the matter. But Djokovic maintained that he has seen no change in the attitude towards him.”I have not noticed anything from their side or from mine,” Djokovic said. “It’s not necessary for people to create any tensions or divisions between us. On the contrary, I have a good relationship with both of them. We always respected each other. We are rivals of course so it’s hard to be friends. We need an open dialogue and for people to have different opinions. That’s what a democratic society is. We all try and be part of that.” Novak Djokovic felt let down by the ATP.Clive Brunskill/Getty ImagesThe Serb said that he, along with certain other players, had grown frustrated with the system which was constantly failing them and that prompted the change.”It’s frustrating for me personally and other players who have been part of the structure because it has failed us many times,” he said. “And many times when top players wanted to be involved and be heard they felt like everything they have said was not really followed through in a way it was supposed to be.” Close Australian Open 2019: Novak Djokovic Wins Final Over Rafael Nadallast_img read more

In Picture: A Facebook logo reflects on a woman’s eye.REUTERS/Dado RuvicNow, Facebook has announced that it has removed 687 pages and accounts associated with Indian National Congress (INC) IT cell for engaging in coordinated inauthentic behaviour. Basically, it used fake accounts for mudslinging opponents with inaccurate facts and spamming the social media platform.”The individuals behind this activity used fake accounts, the majority of which had already been detected and suspended by our automated systems, and joined various Groups to disseminate their content and increase engagement on their own Pages. The Page admins and account owners typically posted about local news and political issues, including topics like the upcoming elections, candidate views, the INC and criticism of political opponents including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). While the people behind this activity attempted to conceal their identities, our review found that it was connected to individuals associated with an INC IT Cell,” Nathaniel Gleicher, Head of Cybersecurity Policy, Facebook said in the official blog post.INC’s IT cell had 138 pages and 549 Facebook accounts with more than 206,000 followers. It apparently spent close to $39,000 (US) on ads between August 2014 and March 2019.Facebook also shared snapshots of fake accounts. For instance, a post-caption-said “Rahul Gandhi’s callout for ‘Justice’ against Modi’s ‘Injustice.” And inside the image, it read—”If a person’s income is 5,000 rupees, then Congress government will credited Rupees 7,000 in his account”. This is apparently related to Congress’s recent announcement about minimum income plan, which envisages that every citizen will be offered cash subsidies up to Rs 72,000 per annum to people belonging to Below Poverty Line (BPL). Facebook removes several pages of Congress over spam in IndiaFacebook Press KitAfter getting corned over the suspension of INC affiliated pages and accounts on Facebook, Congress has responded to the critics on social media platform.”This is to clarify no official pages run by INC have been taken down. The new legislation allows European bodies to levy fines worth up to 4% of annual revenue on companies that breach the data protection rules within Europe.Addressing the fine, Google said it was “studying the decision” of the CNIL to determine its next steps. “People expect high standards of transparency and control from us. We’re deeply committed to meeting those expectations and the consent requirements of the GDPR,” stated Google. Google has been fined €50 million ($57 million) in France by data regulator CNIL for breaching the European Union’s data protection rules. The CNIL said in a statement that Google had not sufficiently informed its users about the exploitation of their personnal data.“We’re not denying that Google informs users who open an account…but the information is disseminated on different documents,” and “it sometimes requires up to five actions to access the relevant information,” Mathias Moulin, the head of rights protections and sanctions at CNIL, told Agence France-Presse.“The information on processing operations for the ads personalization is diluted in several documents and does not enable the user to be aware of their extent,” Moulin added. The fine follows two complaints against Google filed with the CNIL by a pair of European nonprofit organizations advocating for data protection, France’s la Quadrature du Net and Austria’s None Of Your Business.center_img Popular on Variety last_img read more
